What is sustainable?
1 : capable of being sustained
2a : of, relating to, or being a method of harvesting
or using a resource so that the resource is not depleted or
permanently damaged <sustainable techniques> <sustainable agriculture>
b : of or relating to a lifestyle involving the use of sustainable methods <sustainable society>
What is Trap Caught?
The Trap Caught Method utilizes traps similar to a lobster trap to harvest fish.
The fish swims into the baited trap and cannot get back out.
This method helps reduce pain and trauma to the fish while helping
to protect the delicate slime coat and small scales of Sablefish.
This helps ensure a higher quality end product for the consumer.
In addition, trap caught fishing eliminates unwanted bycatch and reduces the environmental impact of dredging or other methods.
Why Frozen at Sea (FAS)?
Sablefish is a delicate deep water fish with fairly soft flesh.
The delicate textures of the fish begin to deteriorate
after short durations of exposure. By hand processing and
immediately deep freezing the fish, we deliver it with premium quality and consistency. This is the best method of handling such a delicate protein.
Why Canadian?
Canadian Sablefish is sustainably caught, carefully handled and
quickly frozen to ensure the consumer receives only the best.
Other Black Cod or Sablefish fisheries utilize different methods that
we feel do not rise to our standards. We have voluntarily reduced
our catch limits to support our fisheries future. We have chosen trap
caught over long lines to protect the fish and the environment.
We have chosen the best method of handling the fish to ensure quality.
