SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability Programs

The Wild Canadian Sablefish fishery takes pride in protecting fish stocks for future generations, managing the resource sustainably and taking steps to respect the habitat we fish in.  Here is information on some of the top sustainability programs from around the globe and what they have to say about Wild Canadian Sablefish:

Seafood Watch

The Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch program helps consumers and businesses make choices for healthy oceans. Our recommendations indicate which seafood items are “Best Choices,” “Good Alternatives,” and which ones you should “Avoid.” Seafood Watch recommendations are science-based, peer reviewed, and use ecosystem-based criteria. Wild Canadian Sablefish is proud to be a Seafood Watch “Best Choice”.

SeaChoice

Sustainable Seafood Canada is a coalition of leading Canadian conservation organizations working together via the SeaChoice program to raise public awareness of the threats to our oceans and the solutions that sustainable fisheries offer. Seachoice is about solutions for healthy oceans. Launched in 2006, SeaChoice was created to help Canadian businesses and shoppers take an active role in supporting sustainable fisheries and aquaculture at all levels of the seafood supply chain. Based on scientific assessments, SeaChoice has created easy-to-use tools that help you make the best seafood choices.

Ocean Wise

Ocean Wise is a Vancouver Aquarium conservation program created to educate and empower consumers about the issues surrounding sustainable seafood. Ocean Wise works directly with restaurants, markets, food services and suppliers ensuring that they have the most current scientific information regarding seafood and helping them make ocean-friendly buying decisions. Wild Canadian Sablefish is an “Ocean Wise Recommended” species.

Blue Ocean Institute

Not all seafood is created equal. Blue Ocean Institute’s From Sea to Table sustainable Seafood Program helps consumers, chefs, retailers and the medical community discover the connection between human health, a healthy ocean, fishing and seafood.  Wild Canadian Sablefish has received the Blue Ocean Institute’s top “Green” rating.

CFOOD

International experts in fisheries management have come together as part of a new initiative, called CFOOD (Collaborative for Food from Our Oceans Data.) The coalition will gather data from around the world and maintain fisheries databases while ensuring seafood sustainability discussions in the media reflect ground-truth science.
